PROVO, Utah (March 27, 2010) — BYU and UNLV played 90 minutes of pre-season soccer but neither came away with a goal to finish with a 0-0 tie in Las Vegas, Saturday.
“It was a valuable experience today. BJ Pugmire slightly hurt his knee and we played the entire 90 minutes without him. Overall, I think we found a few more answers for this season.”
Cougar goalkeepers, Bryan Black and Cory Cosgrave combined for the shutout. Windy weather conditions made connective play difficult as the Cougars and Rebels played. BYU will continue to practice and prepare for the Premier Development League season, beginning May 8 at Orange County.
BYU defeated NCAA Division II foe, Mesa State 3-0 and 1-0 last week in Grand Junction.

Friday morning the men and women’s soccer teams went down to Vegas at noon together in snowy weather. I did not make the trip due to two men’s volleyball broadcasts in Provo but it would have been fun to hang out in 70 degree weather!
The women play UNLV at 9 a.m. and the men play the Rebels at 11 a.m. Last year BYU lost 3-0 to UNLV.
Listen to my conversation with junior forward, Brady Marshall this morning before he left on the bus with the team.

PROVO, Utah (March 26, 2010) — The BYU men’s soccer team will head south on I-15 this weekend to play the UNLV Rebels in Las Vegas in preparation for the Premier League Development season on Saturday, March 27 at 11 a.m. pacific time.
The game will be played at Johan Soccer Stadium. Admission is free. The BYU women’s team will also play UNLV, at 9 a.m.
The Cougars defeated Mesa State twice last Saturday in Grand Junction, Colorado in the team’s first pre-season games. The Cougars won the first game 3-0 on goals from BJ Pugmire (‘13), Zach DeFrancis (‘16), and Brady Marshall (‘56). In the second game the Cougars won 2-1.
“It was a good chance for us to try some new things out,” said coach, Chris Watkins. ”We are excited to measure our progress again this week. Last week we were able to keep the ball pretty well with only three midfielders. We’ll see how we do against a little better competition. It’s early but we are training well.”
PREVIEWING THE COUGARS
The Cougars begin the PDL regular season May 8 at the Orange County Blue Star before returning to Provo for its first home against the Los Angeles Legends on May 21.
2009 REVIEW
BYU finished 7-5-4 overall, in fourth position in the division and just one spot out of the playoffs. Despite some major injuries the Cougars defeated Southwest Division champion, Hollywood Hitmen, 1-0 and tied eventual PDL champ, Ventura County 2-2. Seven starters return this season, including goal keeper, Bryan Black, veteran defenders, KC Whitworth and Drew VanWagenen, and forwards Zach DeFrancis, Brady Marshall, and BJ Pugmire. The Cougars lost seven players to graduation, including All-PDL Western Conference Honorable Mention, Richie Bindrup.

Practice Report/Doug Clark Interview
by admin on Mar.03, 2010, under Team
BYU had its second practice post-tryouts for the Premier Development League season this morning. The team trained from 6:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. by scrimmaging in the Indoor Practice Facility, conditioning with strength & conditioning with Josh Morzelewski, and some more conditioning at the end of practice on Haws Field.
The news of the morning came from recently returned missionary, Zach Dupaix who split his head opener and went to the hospital for stiches after he accidentally ran into James Bindrup. There’s nothing like “welcome home” present like that.

Head Coach-Chris Watkins Interview
Provo, UTAH (Feb. 27, 2010) — After three days of 8v8, 11v11, 2-mile runs, 100 yard dashes, and mental stress, the BYU men’s soccer team announced its 2010 roster.
“We’ll have a great team,” said head coach, Chris Watkins. “There’s a lot of good players. Special players? We’ll find out. There’s certainly more talent on this year’s roster than we had last year.
On the flip side, we had to cut a lot of people that were very good and a lot of players that were on our roster in the past. That was very hard to do.
We know we have a good team and we look forward to the future.”
The roster features 14 players from last year’s Premier Development League team, five recently returned missionaries, two transfers, two freshman already enrolled at BYU, five high school seniors who will join the team following their high school graduations this summer, and one carry over from the fall roster.
The team held its first official practice March 1. The season begins May 8 on the road against the Orange County Blue Star.
