Thursday night was the first of several cuts. The players played some more 8v8 then ran some intense shuttles. You could tell who had ran them before because several of the current team paced themselves and excelled later rather than peaked early.
Let me at least tell you this: Kip Critchlow is fast.
Tomorrow morning’s tryout is bright and early at 6 a.m. Luckily I just show up at the end of it!
Listen to an audio interview with goal keeper, Bryan Black. He says some fun stuff about the competition in tryouts this year and the easier conditioning at the end of today’s tryouts.

Sophomore, Doug Clark looks to attack at tryouts this afternoon.

Goal Keeper, Bryan Black (in blue on the left) paces himself to make a Usain Bolt-like sprint to the finish.

Chris Watkins and the BYU coaching staff have the "fun" task of getting 99 participants trying out down to 21 (plus the incoming freshman already signed) by Saturday night.

Thursday afternoon's tryout was held on the RB Turf Field.

Listen to an audio interview with assistant coach, Chad Sackett.
PROVO, Utah (Feb. 25, 2010) — Day one of the morning portion of open tryouts concluded for the BYU men’s soccer team in the Indoor Practice Facility on campus. The tryout featured 99 players from 14 different states and four countries who competed from 6-9 a.m. this morning.

Players attended tryouts from 6-9 a.m. this morning in the Indoor Practice Facility on campus.
The players scrimmaged 8v8 most of the morning session. The first cuts will be posted after tryouts tonight from 4-6 p.m. at the RB Turf Field.
“It went pretty well,” said assistant coach, Chad Sackett. “In the morning tryout we are usually looking for guys that we kind of know aren’t going to make it. It’s tricky too because we want to get a good look at the guys we want to keep but we also want to cut it down to games that are a little more manageable.
“It’s surprising each year I’ve been involved, how much better the players are.”
The team will select 21 players to begin practice on Monday in preparation for the Premier Development League season. That does not include incoming freshman who will join the team following high school graduation this summer.

Tryouts this Week
by admin on Feb.23, 2010, under Team
PROVO, Utah (Feb. 22, 2010) — The BYU men’s soccer team will hold its annual tryout Thursday, February 25 through Saturday, February 27, 2010 in the Indoor Practice Facility (IPF) on the campus of Brigham Young University.
“We return a lot of players who have some sort of affiliation to the team whether it was before their mission on a fall team or before their mission on the real team,” said head coach, Chris Watkins. “It will be competitive. It will probably be the most competitive tryout we’ve had based on how many people feel like they have a chance of making the team.
“We will only have 21 players at practice the following Monday (March 1). That’s a pretty significant change. Typically we’ve had about 24, 25 at that point. All the returned missionaries will fit into those 21 roster spots. I’m not happy about having to do this but I think it’s the best thing for our program.”

Eligibility
Tryouts are open to interested BYU students and potential incoming freshmen for the Fall of 2010. All incoming freshmen must have a completed application turned in. However they do not have to be accepted at the time of the tryout. All players on the BYU soccer team are full-time, continuing students (12 credits per semester) at the university.
Tryout
The tryout begins on Thursday, February 25th at 6 a.m. in the Indoor Practice Facility. Tryouts will conclude Saturday night. Practice for the team will begin the following week. The team will train on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 6:30-8:50 a.m. (weight training included), and Saturdays from 5-8 p.m. Incoming freshmen who make the team will join the team immediately following their high school graduation.
The tryout will consist primarily of controlled (e.g., 1 touch) scrimmaging and fitness tests, including the beep test and cooper (2 mile) test.
Documentation
All players must fill out a proof of insurance form and provide an official BYU transcript (if a current student) and pay the $30 tryout fee prior to the tryout. This can only be done in person at room 112 of the Richards Building. After submitting these forms and paying the fee you will be given a tryout number to be worn during the tryout. This office is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Athletes will need to register prior to the tryout date.

It should be fun to see who’s added to the team. After publishing the signing day release last Wednesday, I’ve become even more excited at the prospect of practice beginning in a couple of weeks and the season being just around the corner.
I’m quite impressed by the collection of returning starters, injured forwards who will be ready to go (De Francis, Pugmire, Marshall), returned missionaries, and incoming freshman that will make up this year’s team. It should be a very exciting season.
